HOW WE CAN HELP

Soft Tissue / Massage

Soft Tissue massage directly affects muscle, tendons and fascia.

It can be used for relaxation, pain relief or decreasing muscle tone and swelling.

Soft tissue techniques can be an essential part of an overall treatment programme.

Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy modalities can be used in conjunction with other treatments to help with pain relief, increasing muscle activity and aiding soft tissue and bony healing.

Ultrasound – Ultrasound uses mechanical energy to improve the tissue healing in protein rich tissues such as ligaments, tendons, fascia and scar tissue.

TENS [Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation] – This method of electrotherapy provides pain relief by exciting sensory nerves. Using pads over the desired area can produce a pain gaiting mechanism alongside opioid release.

NMES [Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation – NMES uses electrical impulses to elicit an involuntary muscle contraction. It can help boost injured or underactive muscle tissue or improve healthy muscle in athletes.

Taping

You may have seen athletes in many sports modelling brightly coloured tape, often on large muscles such as hamstrings and calves, but it has many more uses than just looking good!

Kinesiology Taping – This thin, stretchy elastic based tape is very close to the make-up of the body’s skin. It can be used effectively to relax overactive muscles, facilitate underactive muscle tissue and reduce bruising/swelling. K Tape is excellent for treating a range of injuries from poor posture to sports injuries.

Traditional Taping – Using rigid zinc oxide tape, it is possible to correct or stabilize joint positions. The McConnell taping method for example is very effective for anterior knee pain.

Acupuncture / Dry Needling

Acupuncture is the use of fine needles which inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes. It is usually most effective over 4-6 sessions and is an effective form of pain relief.

Acupuncture can be most effective for lower back pain, sciatica and headaches but can help injuries across the body.

Dry needling aims to create a physiological response within a muscle to release tension. It can be used effectively in combination with other treatments in the same session.

Joint Manipulation / Mobilisation

Many people are under the impression that only chiropractors can manipulate or ‘realign’ joints. However manipulative therapy is commonly used in Physiotherapy to allow better mechanical joint function and enable the return of normal neuro-muscular activation. Manipulative therapy can be used for spinal joints, alongside peripheral joints.

Physiotherapy also makes use of lower grade mobilization. This treatment allows the Therapist to gently increase the movement of, or provide pain relief to dysfunctional joints.

Rehabilitation

Corrective exercise can help normalise muscle imbalances that may lead to injury and pain, and can be done at home or in the gym.

Specific exercise is a key part of the healing process in order to stress tissues and encourage healing; it can also be used preventively to prevent injuries resulting from sports and exercise.
